Windows 10 on Android: the mirroring

First, that is ever found while searching for Windows on Android is the Microsoft announcing and describing their Windows 10 mirroring Android. What’s that? This is an opportunity for you to give your Windows desktop PC remote access to your Android’s document and photos. This is done via an Android app called Your Phone Companion by Microsoft. It’s free and available for download on Google Play, featuring 5+ million installs and 4.2 average quality review rating.

According to Devindra Hardawar from Endgadget, the Companion app has got the following pros and cons.

The pros (+):

  1. The app installation is fast and easy.
  2. Drag-and-drop is essential for moving your files and do other changes with them.
  3. Handling pictures like any file on Windows.
  4. Messaging is synchronized quite fast (15-30 sec).
  5. Accessing to websites and recent documents via Windows 10 Timeline in the Microsoft Launcher.

The cons (-):

  1. A tricky way of setting up access between PC and Android devices on the first run.
  2. The previous messenger’s history isn’t uploaded.

So, as you can notice, the “Your Phone Companion” application allows live streaming of your Android screen on the desktop and vice versa. While that you can operate some native Android apps on Windows (or Windows apps on Android) but this list is quite limited.

In this article, we’d like to look at the indifferent intentions, like those which include installing Windows directly on Android device (not the apart situation, when Android is installed on Windows). There may be different reasons for that, including just the self-education and developing some operating systems administration skills, software development skills or other technical and software engineering goals.

Obviously, Windows 10 is to “heavy” for average Android device to handle. That’s probably why very few users try “playing around” with Windows 10. Though there are different ways to install Windows 10 on Android which you are going to learn below on the examples of installation the other Windows versions on Android. Besides Windows OS, there’s a possibility of running particular Windows Applications on Android natively, which means with almost native speed, directly on Android devices without any streaming. If your purposes can be described with this, jump to the subject right now.

Windows 8 for Android

Windows 8 Launcher APK

After all, depending on what your goal is, you may use some simple app that can bring Windows-like interface (not functionality) to your Android device. There’s an app called “Windows 8 Launcher”. Among such recognized useful features users will find:

  • Adjustable Windows style icons size

The application will try to associate most common applications like dialer, message, google play, etc. If you are running the launcher for the very first time and no Android application has been associated yet, then the list of all installed apps is opened and you can associate any app of your wish to this tile yourselves.
  • 4 additional tiles (like Clock, Weather, Sticky Notes, Stock Market, etc) which can be customized as per your need.

This application is available as an APK and can be downloaded here. In case you’d like to run native and fully functional Windows apps on Android with native speed jump to the key paragraph 🡓 or continue reading for other options.

Windows 7 on Android devices

This section is really simple. The matter is that if you need particularly Windows 7 on Android, you may just try the way mentioned above. Another thing would be not to bother with Windows 7 and try playing with Windows 8 on your Android. Anyway, before starting any action stop and think: “WHY am I doing all this stuff for?” And if you are pushing Windows on Android only for running some particular Windows apps on Android devices, consider this helpful app and stop making simple things hard =).

In case you need just an interface looking like Windows 7 on Android or want to have experience alike Windows 7 provides, so simply install Windows 7 Launcher (as we did it for Windows 8). You can get an APK here. As soon as the standard instalation done, the users get the following great features:

  • Windows Widgets: the Weather and Inbuilt Clock
  • Start menu composed of contacts, email, social networking, pictures, music.

  • High-quality customization compared to any other operating system.
  • Ads can be disabled from the App settings for FREE!

Windows XP Emulator for Android

At last, we’ve come to one of the most favored Windows version – Windows XP. Not mentioning it’s quite outdated nowadays! Though, being quite a lite version of all its followers’ versions, Windows XP is much more usable on Android (comparing to other Windows versions) and have different ways of installation.

There are several options for installing Windows XP on Android and all of them can’t do without emulators for Windows. In this article, we are going to look through the main 3 algorithms:

  1. Using the bunch an emulator with a virtual machine
  2. Using a special emulator app called Limbo PC Emulator
  3. Using a special Android app called Windows Emulator (the easiest way)

Install Windows XP on Android with QEMU and BOCHS

This is a very complicated, multi-step way which results in Windows on Android working very slow. So, this is highly recommended only for playing and general self-education, not for real work!

The entire process is divided into two big parts: the preparation and the main part. While preparation, you’ll need to get the following files which are going to help you:

  • Download the QEMU manager – here
  • Download the BOCHS APK – here
  • Download the SDL.ZIP file –here
  • Download the blank image file – here
  • Then you need to rename this IMG file into “c.img”

We’ll need all of these a little bit later. As soon as you are done with that, you’re all set and ready to get to the main part. For that, you will need an Android device itself (tablet) and some PC to do the needed installations.

  1. Install QEMU manager on your device
  2. Open QEMU manager
  3. Hit the “+” button to create a new Virtual Machine (VM)
  4. Leave everything to the default.
  5. Now click “Drives” and “HardDisk” options then browse the c.img file we’ve prepared earlier, and insert it.
  6. Then click on CD-ROM and insert your windows installation DVD.
  7. Select “Use Physical Drive” option to start booting Windows from the CD/DVD drive. In case you have neither CD/DVD ROM in your PC nor the CD/DVD with Windows XP, utilize even better way of getting a Windows XP ISO file and using it as the “Physical Drive”.
  8. After that install Windows XP in the virtual machine by following instructions provided by the Windows installer.
  9. Now you need to copy the files to the Android Device:
    • Create a folder with “SDL” title in the main catalog of your Android SD card
    • Copy the SDL.ZIP file to SDL folder on your Android.
    • Copy the c.img file there as well.
    • Copy BOCHS.APK into that folder to set it up on your Android
  10. On Android device just tap on BOCHS icon and booting into Windows should start. Just follow the prompts to complete the installation via BOCHS.

Beware that installing Windows XP into the VM takes about an hour and the first boot of Windows XP on Android takes about 15 minutes, so be patient. And don’t even try to use Windows XP installed in such a way on Android for work or some of your projects. You’ll get neither sound nor internet connection and very slow performance.

This app is ExaGear Windows Emulator, an application for porting x86 Windows software to ARM-based Android hardware.

The core technology here is the binary translator that creates a special environment, allowing to run Wine HQ software natively on Android and then lets the Wine do its own job – launch Windows applications.
